Tuesday Update: Weights and Jackets.

Yes, I shopped. I couldn’t help it. I am SO HAPPY to be able to button cardigans, blazers, and jackets again! My existing tops are starting to look loose and floppy on me. (Um, pants, will you soon follow? Please?) Now that it’s warming up, I’m back to layering with casual blazer-style jackets instead of thick bundle-me-up-to-my-nose sweaters. I haven’t worn my parka in days! I’m 100% New Englander — anything above 40F means no outerwear needed!

I wanted to pick up one or two jackets in a smaller size and went to a secondhand store on a whim today. I was thrilled to find two jackets, exactly the style, fabric, shape, and size that I was looking for. Really, how often does that happen? This purchase is just enough to make my soon-to-be-too-big wardrobe look better. I can just cinch it!

And of course, the weights. I’m ready to go whole-hog on a free-weight gym setup. For now, I’ve settled for some dumbbells. My mind is shifting to wanting to spend my monthly clothing budget on free weights, but I’m working hard at not trading one superfluous expense for another. I already have a gym membership; I don’t need a home gym.

Do I?

What if you imitate the gel polish kit purchase–wait 8 months or a year or some set amount of time that will ensure that you will still be at it (and a goal to look forward to). Sometimes it’s just when I buy the right equipment that I lose interest or otherwise stop doing the thing that I needed the new equipment for.

I’m hoping to start doing my workouts at home. I’m on week two of an eight-week program, and then there are six other stages at three weeks each. But yes, I often stock up on supplies for my next hobby only to have it fizzle out. Remember when you taught me to crochet? I bought tons of stuff…and made one tiny scarf.

For me the equipment is the hobby’s kiss of death. Make the hobby prove itself first. If it stands the test of time, then it can get rewarded. Our culture as a whole is more concerned with the equipment than the hobby!

True. I’ve only been doing the weights for two weeks, but I feel like the fitness thing is here to stay because it’s been three months. On the other hand, it’s ONLY been three months! The new dumbbells allow me to do everything I need to for the next couple of months, so I will take your advice and wait at least that long! Though for equipment, I don’t want to buy anything else new. I’m checking Craigslist…need willpower to not check!
