Monthly Budget: Beneficial or Bad News?

I’ve been trying to figure something out. Do I want a monthly clothing budget? Do I need one? Is this shopping fast just a fad for me? Will this work the way a habit does, where it takes 21 days to “stick”? Or will I crave & cave?

I’m always gung-ho in the beginning, stocking up on all the supplies, figuring out what and how I need to do… and then things just peter out.

Another blog that I regularly read referenced the idea of setting aside 2-8% of your monthly net income for clothing alone. I would need include my husband and two kids in that figure, so it would be considerably less than I currently spend on just myself. I’d have fun refreshing my husband’s wardrobe, because most of his shirts are older than our children…and Methuselah.

I’m not convinced that it’s a good idea to open the floodgates right now, even with a pre-determined spending limit. I need to get shopping out of my system. I’ll try 21 days and then think about a budget.

What about you? Do you have a monthly clothing budget? What works or doesn’t work?
